16 people were left dead after a firebomb was thrown into a restaurant in Cairo, Egypt on Dec. 4. Two men are suspected of attacking El Sayad restaurant/nightclub, and people standing nearby captured the aftermath on video. Watch the scary clip here.
The video shows black smoke and fire billowing out of the downstairs entrance of the club, while those standing nearby helplessly try to get things under control with fire extinguishers, yelling inside the blazing room to try and see if anyone was inside. Unfortunately, the club was in the basement of the building, and escape wasn’t easy for those trapped. 16 were left for dead, while three made it out with injuries.
Nine of the dead were able to be taken to a nearby hospital, and the director confirmed that they’d all died from smoke inhalation. It was reported that there had been an argument in the club earlier in the evening between staff and a group of customers, and the attack is being treated as a crime, rather than an act of terrorism, at the moment. It’s also rumored that one of the attackers was a former employee who had been fired from the restaurant.
El Sayad operates as a restaurant, but is one of many small eateries in Egypt that also serves as a bar serving alcohol in the evenings. This attack took place around 6:30 a.m., an the club was closed, so most people had luckily left by this time, but most of the cleaning staff was still inside finishing up their shifts. So sad.
