Wow, we are speechless! ‘The Wiz’ on Dec. 3 was great, all-knowing and all-powerful! The cast blew us away with their modern version of the classic story of Dorothy in search of the meaning of life.
The Wiz Live was a success! We were so excited to watch the The Wiz Live! on NBC Dec. 3 and we were not disappointed in the least. First off, our hats off to Shanice Williams (Dorothy Gale), her performance was magical. She is such a powerful singer and a fabulous actress. We were blown away by everyone and can we talk about Ne-Yo (Tin Man)!?
Whether it was Uzo Aduba, (Glinda), Queen Latifah, (The Wiz), Amber Riley, (Addaperle), Stephanie Mills, (Auntie Em), Shanice, (Dorothy), or Mary J. Blige, (Evillene), it was an unbelievably powerful cast!
The story kicked off with the traditional plot of Dorothy’s house being in the middle of a tornado. Dorothy wakes up in Oz and she encounters the Tin Man, the Lion and the Scarecrow. As they journey down the yellow brick road they have all the typical things happen to them that did in the 1939 movie and also the 1978 play.
But what was really cool about this two-hour show were all the modern day references. They made jokes about songs, modern day celebs and even whipped out an iPad at the beginning of the show. Instead of “Follow The Yellow Brick Road” they sang, “Ease On Down The Road.” This was also in the original 70s musical.
Now it’s time to discuss Ne-Yo, who blew us away with his performance. Plus, Shanice carried the weight of the show on her shoulders and at just 18, she proved she is a star. Um, how funny was it when Dorothy called the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow her “squad.” We also need to take a second to mention the kick a** costumes. They were totally on point. The Lion looks fierce and Shanice looked adorable. The Scarecrow’s makeup was on point and The Wiz was terrifyingly perfect in green!
One of the best performances during the show was when they sang, “Brand New Day.” We were dancing and singing right along with everyone and the yellow costumes really got us all going! When they finally discover that The Wiz isn’t “all-powerful” it was pretty amazing. They pull the curtain down and learn that The Wiz is Queen Latifah — a woman, in a bathrobe! That’s when Dorothy says, “What’s wrong with being a woman.” Exactly, nothing! This show was more than just an awesome medley of music hits, it was a message about gender equality.
But what we really thought was unbelievable was when Uzo took the stage as Glinda and sang “Believe In Yourself.” Who knew she could sing like that?! She wore a gorgeous golden gown and explained to Dorothy that all she had to do was “believe” and click her heels three times. Simple enough, right? (Side note, the camera didn’t pan over fast enough and we only saw her click her heels twice … darn!)
A few small hiccups which can be expected during any live show: a camera was shown right at the top of the show in one shot. Amber’s sparks didn’t work on her character’s exit and Ne-Yo kept losing his tin hat.” But if that’s all that went wrong, we’d say it was a total success!
