This is no case of “yadda-yadda-yadda.” This might just make you cry, as the cast of Seinfeld gave James Anthony Calder the greatest present for his 67th birthday. The stars of the show, from Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 54, to Patrick Warburton, 51, to even Wayne Knight, 60, recorded heartwarming birthday greetings, wishing him a happy birthday. Even the Soup Nazi was there!
Yes, Larry Thomas, the actor who played the stern soup server wished the fan a happy birthday. James Anthony was diagnosed with a rare form of non-smoking lung cancer, according to his son, James Calder, who wrote up the tale at the Huffington Post. While undergoing treatment, James Anthony was approaching his 67th birthday, and his son thought he would enlist the cast of his father’s favorite show to cheer him up.
The first person to respond to James’s request was Elaine’s boss, John O’Hurley (who played J. Peterman.) After that, the messages started pouring in. All sorts of cast members, from Kenny Bania to Carol to Lippman to Elaine’s on-again/off-again boyfriend, Puddy — all recorded messages for James Anthony. But it wouldn’t be complete without NEWMAN. Jerry’s nemesis chimed in. But after he wished James Anthony a happy birthday, he said, “I was told there would be cake.” While Michael Richards didn’t record a message, Kramer did contact James by email.
“He wanted to actually call my dad on the day of his birthday to wish him the best and have a chat,” James wrote, adding that Michael didn’t record a video because “he wasn’t interested in the publicity and just wanted to help me wish my dad a happy birthday.”
Sadly, James Anthony health deteriorated and he had to be admitted to the hospital days before his birthday. With time running out, James and his mother started showing his father the videos and, “he really felt the love and support.” Especially when Julia’s video arrived, who was “thrilled” to hear how James Anthony enjoyed the show. A day after Julia’s message arrived, James Anthony tragically passed away.
Though James Anthony’s story has a sad ending, he lived an entire year longer than what the doctors expected and he was remembered, according to his son, as a “how great of a guy he was and how he loved to laugh.” You can see all the videos at James’s YouTube channel.
