This is no laughing matter. Comedian Chris Rock and his ex-wife are reportedly being criminally investigated for raising a South African girl without taking the legal steps to formerly adopt her. They are reportedly facing ‘child trafficking’ charges as South African police investigate the situation.
Chris Rock, 50, is in big trouble. He and his ex-wife Malaak Compton-Rock are reportedly facing “child trafficking” charges after raising a South African girl in their NJ home for almost seven years without legally adopting her. Ntombi–futhi Samantha, reportedly moved in with the comedian and his family back in 2008 when she was only 6 months old.
Things started to unravel for Chris and his ex after South African officials realized the Hollywood star and his family had been caring for a the young female citizen whom they never adopted. The nation’s elite Hawk unit has gotten involved in the custodial case of Ntombi following the divorce proceedings between Chris from Malaak. The young girl was brought to New Jersey by the comedian and his estranged wife on a tourist visa in Nov. 2008, the Daily Mail reports.
A member of the Hawks team stated to the outlet, “It sounded like a strange case and it has been flagged up to us. We are awaiting more details from Home Affairs who are looking into how this came about. Whatever arrangement there was between the Rocks and the parents of the child, laws are in place to prevent parents from allowing their children to travel overseas indefinitely with third parties.” The detective went on to add, “It seems there has not been regular contact with the biological parents and if money changed hands, or even gifts in return for the child staying with other people overseas, it sounds very much like child trafficking.” As for Ntombi’s biological parents, they still reside in South African. They have three children but are now separated, according to the report.
Malaak’s lawyer David Aronson of Aronson, Mayefsky & Sloan told People that she is in the process of adopting the little girl, legally. “While the adoption by Malaak is not yet finalized, it is actively in process under the rigorous guidelines and safeguards of international adoption policy,” he stated. “The child is in the country lawfully with the written consent of her birth parents, and while here, has been cherished and adored by the entire Rock family. [Ntombi] has been raised by the parties as a member of the family and has been solely supported by the parties. She also stated that she continues to be the girl’s primary caregiver.”
