As it turns out, Magic Mike wasn’t just all about hot male strippers and swoon-worthy six packs — there was also some major drama happening on set too! While it’s long been speculated that co-stars Alex Pettyfer, 25, and Channing Tatum, 35, weren’t exactly the best of friends on set, the British actor has finally revealed the truth behind their long-standing beef, admitting it all came down to money and name calling. Speaking about their feud with writer Bret Easton Ellis for his podcast B.E.E., Alex confirmed that when it comes to Channing Tatum, the two are far from friends. “It’s true,” Alex admitted. “Channing does not like me for many reasons, many being my own fault.”
The 25-year-old actor went on to explain that much of their bitter feud could be attributed to his own insecurities and his prior bad boy reputation.”I was scared to speak. I actually did my work and I sat in the corner and listened to music because I had been told anything I did was wrong by my reps,” Alex said on the podcast. “I was very insecure as a human being. That also gave me a bad rep because everyone was like, ‘Alex doesn’t speak because he thinks he’s better than everyone else.’ That’s not true. I was just generally nervous and scared to be myself. I was in character.”
Alex Pettyfer On Channing Tatum Feud: ‘I Made The Poor Decisions’
From there, things only continued to go from bad to worse between the two after Alex, who was renting a place from one of Channing’s friends with his then-fiancée Riley Keough, moved out of the apartment after just four months because he allegedly couldn’t breathe due to what he believed was mold and dust in the apartment. After that, Alex claims he got caught up in the death of his cousin, and simply forgot to pay the rent he owned, which resulted in an angry out burst from Channing.
“All of a sudden I got a very negative email from Channing, rightfully so, saying, ‘Don’t f–k my friends. You owe money. Pay the f–king money. Don’t be a clown,'” he explained. “I really took that the wrong way, which I shouldn’t have. And emailed him back saying, ‘I’m in a negative headspace, can you respect me for a moment?’ And I just got hounded through this time of grieving for money.”
Unfortunately, the tension between the two never quite subsided, and Alex claims that when it came time for re-shoots, Channing had already “told everyone he didn’t like me … what Channing says goes. He’s a movie star. I made the poor decisions.”
Still despite all of their drama, Alex insists that he has nothing but the upmost respect for his one-time co-star. “Channing was actually an incredible influence on me because after this whole situation happened — this was kind of the end of my immaturity and all my experiences put into one,” he concluded. “It was an incredible experience making Magic Mike. I wouldn’t replace it for anything.”
