Keke Palmer’s character, Zayday Williams, is one of our favorite Kappas on ‘Scream Queens’ — and she dished on the inspiration behind Zayday’s amazing wardrobe, which she had a hand in shaping. She also admitted she would love a part on ‘American Horror Story.’
Keke Palmer, 22, keeps us wildly entertained each week on Scream Queens as Zayday Williams, co-president of the Kappa Kappa Tay sorority and the self-proclaimed “aunt hen” of the group. We got to chat with the talented star at the celebration for UK brand Primark and their second US store opening at King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania on Nov. 19, where she filled us in on the inspiration behind Zayday’s wardrobe — and she even admitted she snagged some stylish pieces from the set! (Hey, we can’t say we blame her).
We can’t get enough of the fierce fashion on Scream Queens and would love to play dress up in their wardrobe on set — and Keke can’t get enough of it, either! While they might have wrapped up shooting season one, she admitted she didn’t leave the set empty-handed. “I absolutely did,” she replied when asked if she took any of Zayday’s amazing looks. “I snagged a bunch of stuff from the wardrobe people – they do an amazing job. They really allow us to be a part of building our characters and that’s fun for me, because I definitely wanted to get some of that Moesha flair into Zayday’s style, because that’s really what it is. It’s like Moesha in modern day, and that’s really important to me because I grew up watching Moesha. I grew up watching that character that is respectable, but also showing you the inside of American black culture. You know, Zayday isn’t like Hilary from Fresh Prince of Bel Air – she’s like Moesha but very smart, she’s not a joke – you know what I mean? So, I love being able to be a part of something like that again in today’s day and also in a different setting. Because in our world everybody’s mixing together – cultures, styles – and so it’s good to see that on Scream Queens because they’re portraying the reality.”
Ryan Murphy enlisted Keke for the role of Zayday — and it was American Horror Story that had her so eager to work with the talented creator! “Absolutely! I would loooove to do something on AHS,” she said when asked if she would ever consider a role on the miniseries. “I fell in love with him [Ryan Murphy] from AHS season one, so, if I got the opportunity to do something again with him, outside of Scream Queens, I would love it.”
The period miniseries is definitely darker and more twisted than the Kappa sorority house — but Keke knows exactly what decade she would want to dive into in the show. Her penchant for the fashion from the early 2000s totally influenced her response! “I would probably want to do the early 2000s decade,” she said. “I’m obsessed with the 2000s – the styling – everything – I’m obsessed – and please give me some futuristic looking Gucci goggles!”
While we aren’t feeling too nostalgic about low-rise flared denim, camisoles and shrugs, we wouldn’t mind seeing Keke revive the styles on the show!
