Charlie Sheen sat down with Matt Lauer on Nov. 17 and revealed that he is HIV-positive and has been battling the disease for four years. The actor was very emotional as he told Matt how he discovered he had the disease and that he’s spent millions paying off people to not reveal his diagnosis.
Charlie Sheen is HIV-positive. The 50-year-old gave his most revealing interview ever on The Today Show, when he admitted he has the immune deficiency disease. He told Matt Lauer that he’s paid millions to cover up his disease over the past few years and that he finally wants to put an end to the speculation.”I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV-positive,” Charlie said.
It was very shocking and emotional to watch Charlie, the longtime Hollywood bad boy admit he is battling HIV. “I’m here to admit that I am in fact HIV-positive.” He also went on to say that he’s tired of all the rumors: “I have to put an end to these truths.” Charle also told Matt that he first learned of his disease four years ago but he still does not know how he initial contracted the disease, “it started with crushing headaches and sweating the bed 2-3 nights — I thought it was over.” He also said: “It’s a hard three letters to absorb, you know? It’s a turning point in one’s life.”
Charlie also admitted that he has paid various people, including prostitutes, hush money so that they wouldn’t reveal his diagnosis to the world. “I have paid those people — not that many — but enough to where it has depleted the future.” How many people? “Enough to bring it into the millions. What people forget is that that’s money they’re taking from my children. They think it’s just me, but I have five kids and a granddaughter.” Charlie also says that one prostitute took a picture of his immune suppressing medications that he was taking and threatened to sell them to the media: “This was after I told her ‘Thank you for your time, we’re not going to see each other anymore’ it was after she spent the night.” Will Charlie continue to pay people off? “Not after today I’m not. I think I released myself from this prison today.”
Matt also brought up Charlie’s infamous Today Show interview from 2011 where he proudly stated he had “tiger blood” and “Adonis DNA.” “I was so depressed by the condition [at that time]. I was in that I was doing a lot of drugs,” Charlie told Matt. “I was drinking way too much. I was making really bad decisions. That part, 100%. I wish I could blame it on that but that was more of a roid rage. This was on the heels of that, though, let me say.”
There has also been a lot of speculation that Charlie was knowingly having sex with individuals since his diagnosis and not telling them he was HIV-positive, but he adamantly denies this. “Impossible. Impossible.” But he does admit he’s had unprotected sex. “Yes. But the two people that I did that with … they were completely warned ahead of time.” He also told Matt that he’s told every single sexual partner since his diagnosis: “Yes, I have. No exception.” But Charlie doesn’t look at this as a death sentence, he wants to tell the world his story: “I have a responsibility now to better myself and to help a lot of other people.”
The news was first broken by The National Enquirer and RadarOnline.com and they both claimed that Charlie had a “long history” of sleeping with porn stars and strippers. They also alleged that he slept with over 5,000 women and had continued to sleep with women despite knowing he was affected. “Charlie had sex with multiple partners since learning his HIV status without informing them of his potentially deadly HIV infection … he has been tortured by the thought that his acting genius will be forgotten. Charlie’s worst fear is that he will be remembered not as a great actor, but as someone who contracted the disease.”
Howard Bragman, a top Hollywood publicist and crisis manager, told People, that he was approached six months ago to help Charlie deal with this “crisis” but they didn’t end up working together. [Charlie] is getting treatment, and a lot of people in his life know about it. It’s been going on for quite awhile. He’s not necessarily comfortable talking about it. It was very hard to get up the courage for him to talk about it. I’ve known about this a long time, it’s not a surprise to me. I feel very sorry for his pain. And I hope it’s used as a teachable moment for the world. This is a disease that can affect anyone … The interview [on TODAY] could open up a lot of sympathy for [Charlie,] but he has to be concerned about a fear of litigation from former sexual partners. You don’t take that lightly.”
Charlie has five children, Cassandra Jade Estevez, 30, with his high school girlfriend, Paula Profit. Charlie and Denise Richards have two girls, Sam J. Sheen, 11, and 10-year-old Lola Rose Sheen and he and his ex-wife, Brooke Mueller have 6-year-old twin boys, Bob and Max Sheen. Brooke responded to HollywoodLife.com‘s inquiry on Charlie’s health with “no comment.”
