Little Big Town wasn’t so little at the 2015 CMA’s. They got a rousing ovation for their performance of their hit ‘Girl ‘Crush.’ The ballad already took home single and song of the year awards early on in the ceremony.
Little Big Town performed their ballad “Girl Crush” to a packed house at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena for the 2015 Country Music Association Awards. With Karen Fairchild‘s soaring lead vocals, the quarter’s hit ballad about heartache was wildly received by their audience, with a standing ovation for their amazing live version.
The band features Kimberly Schlapman, Karen Fairchild, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet , who have performed together for 17 years. They went into the night as only vocal group nominated in the coveted Album of the Year category for their release Pain Killer. They were also up for single and music video of the year for “Girl Crush” as well as musical event of the year for “Smokin’ and Drinkin'” with Miranda Lambert. They’ve won Vocal Group of the Year at every CMA awards ceremony since 2012.
The band won the first award of the night as”Girl Crush” took home Single of the Year. In taking the stage, they noted it was “about heartache and jealousy…about being brave and being bold! Thanks Country radio for having the guts to play it….the fans want to hear it!”
The win was a sweet vindication for the band, which had to undergo controversy earlier this year with “Girl Crush.” Some radio stations dropped the tune from their playlists after misinterpreting the lyrics to be about lesbian love and allegedly trying to push a “gay adgenda.” But Kimberly explained that the song isn’t even about a woman loving another woman.“This woman is just looking at the woman her man left her for and wondering, ‘What does she have that I don’t have? What am I missing? What is it that she’s giving you that I can’t give you?’” she explained in a Vevo interview at the time.
