Who knew our boy Justin Timberlake would ever go country? The RnB crooner slayed the CMAs with pal Chris Stapleton by performing “Tennessee Whiskey,” and “Drink You Away” to raucous applause and a standing ovation. The friends who duet together, stay together!
Justin Timberlake and Chris Stapleton, the New Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, stunned at the CMAs with a striking performance of Chris’ hit “Tennessee Whiskey,” and Justin’s “Drink You Away.” The audience praised the duo with a standing ovation and an amazing sing-a-long. This was truly a performance to remember!
Did that just happen? Chris and Justin put on one of the most fantastic performances at an awards show we’ve seen in a long time. Who knew that Justin had such smooth country vocals — and that Chris and his band could jam to a JT hit so flawlessly. They’re a power duo, and it’s making us really think they should cut an album together! We think the audience would agree! Backed by a blaring horn section and Chris’ trusty band, they were a force to be reckoned with. Did you see the audience on their feet, grinning and singing along with every word?
When we heard that Justin was sharing the stage with Chris, we couldn’t believe it. But the entertainers are close buddies, and once Chris found out he was nominated for Male Vocalist of the Year, New Artist of the Year and Album of the Year (he won them all!) at the 2015 CMAs, he had to bring Justin into the mix. It’s not every day you get to perform on stage at a massive awards show with your friend!
“[Justin] is obviously one of the greatest musical talents in the world, maybe ever, that we have,” Chris told Rolling Stone Country. “I called him up with no thought of him agreeing to it, and he was ready to start planning it right then. I said, ‘Well, I think maybe we should wait, and if we get nominated they’ll let me have [a slot].’ He was so gracious and kind to want to do it and was so excited about it, and I’m excited about it. It’ll be something I’ve never done before for sure.”
Justin and Chris weren’t the only super duo to perform during the CMAs. Fall Out Boy paired with Thomas Rhett, and John Mellencamp joined Keith Urban. Unconventional choices, but it made such an amazing night to remember! We know we’re going to be thinking about Justin and Chris’ performance for a long time — and whether or not Justin considers cutting a country album.
