We got to chat with Amy Wells, the woman who totally HANDLED Olivia Pope’s chic apartment, who dished on tips for how to make your home look more like Olivia’s amazing space — and how you can do so without breaking the bank!
Amy Wells, the set decorator extraordinaire behind some of the most covetable homes on television, (including Olivia Pope’s pristine apartment on Scandal and Cher Horowitz’s dream closet in Clueless), teamed up with HomeGoods and dished on tips for totally transforming your space without having to splurge. Whether you want to elevate your space with a chic dose of Olivia Pope’s style or are simply stumped when it comes to mixing prints and colors, she has it handled. Read on for her the tips she exclusively shared with HollywoodLife, and be sure to check back for more on how to revamp your space, just in time for holiday entertaining.
You’re behind Olivia Pope’s perfect apartment — how can someone make their space look more like hers?
“Lots of white, and light, ethereal colors. I also gave her that blue chair, because I felt like she needed just one piece of accent furniture that really popped – and of course, wine glasses!”
How did you come up with the concept for her space?
“The general concept for Olivia’s space was in place when I joined, and then I was tasked to bring it to life. When I read a script for the first time I have to visualize who the character is, where they’ve been, their personality traits, and how they would curate a space. Then, I set out creating a space that fits their lifestyle. Olivia is a strong, independent woman with incredible style, and I wanted her home to reflect that.”
What are the best accent pieces if you want to re-glam your home space for less?
“I love putting together vignettes with little pops of interesting things from your past. You don’t have to start from scratch when you’re putting together a room – I like to start with a piece that has a lot of meaning to me and build it out from there by shopping at places like HomeGoods. This could be as simple as this beautiful vase from my grandmother paired with two hand-blown mercury glass vases from HomeGoods. Pro tip: I always use groups of 3 or one standalone piece – never use even numbers, unless they’re candlesticks!”
What are the right and wrong ways to mix prints and colors?
“One thing to remember with prints – if you have a white background with a print, do not mix with a print with an off-white background. That’s a mix that sets off my mismatch alarm! Other than that, I like to get creative and mix and match patterns. One way to make sure you’re on the right track is to lay out all the prints in front of you and take in the whole “look.” I also recommend mixing in solids with texture.”
If your significant other is moving in, how can you reimagine a space without totally scrapping your fave feminine accents — and without turning it into a complete man cave?
“You need to be willing to compromise. You’ll likely have to lose the pink florals, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a happy medium. Take his temperature on his comfort level. You may settle with neutrals, or he may surprise you with some décor opinions of his own! If you want to welcome him into your life, you can give up some, (not all), and come to an agreement on what you both like.”
What was your favorite element from the Clueless set?
“Clueless was actually my first big feature film. I felt very challenged by it – but it was so rewarding. I had a lot of favorite scenes, but I especially loved doing the dining room. It was just such a gorgeous and majestic space, and I had the huge marble table specially made for the film, which was really fun for me.”
Any last minute changes on set? Was Cher’s closet always going to be so amazing?
“Cher’s closet was truly amazing – and was so fun to work on. We collaborated with wardrobe and chose the most incredible, eccentric outfits to make it pop!”
