It’s no secret that Tony Bennett has a great voice — and on Nov. 1, he showed that off in front of the millions watching Game 5 of the 2015 World Series. Tony took the field prior to the game to give a roaring rendition of ‘America The Beautiful.’
This could be it — the New York Mets take on the Kansas City Royals for the fifth time on Nov. 1, and with the Royals up 3-1, if they win tonight, that’s it. So, who else would sing at what may be the final game of the season? Of course, it’s Mr. Tony Bennett. The iconic singer gave an outstanding performance of “America The Beautiful,” and what a way to kick things off!
Backed by a chorus of students from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts — which Tony founded — he belted out the classic patriotic tune. His voice was booming as ever, and he still hit those tough notes with ease! Just before a firework ending, Tony put his own twist on the lyrics “From see to shining sea” with an epic high note that made for the perfect beginning to a historic night.
Before taking the field on Sunday night, he posted a photo from rehearsal. He captioned the Instagram shot, “I can’t wait to perform at the World Series tonight on @foxtv! Just finished rehearsal with student musicians from the school Susan and I founded in Queens, @franksinatraschoolofthearts. See you tonight!”
Tony, 89, is from Astoria, Queens, so CitiField is pretty much his back yard! Plus, he’s joining quite the group of stars. Cleon Jones, Darryl Strawberry and Mookie Wilson are set to throw the first pitches at the game, and as iconic Mets’ players, the team’s probably hoping they will bring them some luck by stepping onto the mound. Either way, this will be the last game of 2015 that the Mets will play at home. If they do win and move on, they will head back to Kansas City for the duration of the series.
The Mets must win Game 5 to stay in the World Series, as the Royals are already leading 3 to 1. And maybe Tony will also bring the boys good luck! We know they didn’t get so lucky during Game 4, even though Demi Lovato absolutely killed with her version of the National Anthem before the game.
What did you guys think of Tony’s “America The Beautiful” rendition? Let us know!
