Take a look at him now: Phil Collins is no longer ‘officially’ retired from music. The ‘Against All Odds’ singer stepped away from touring and recording nearly ten years ago, but Phil announced he’s working on a comeback album and a brand new tour!
Fans of Phil Collins, 64, could feel it coming in the air tonight — the “Sussudio” singer is making his comeback! It’s been a decade since Phil released any new music. Now, the man who conquered the 1980s with the band Genesis and as a solo artist says he’s ready to retire from retirement and get back out on the road!
“I’m no longer officially retired,” Phil told RollingStone on Oct. 28, adding that the “horse is out of the stable and I’m raring to go.” Fans are ready to welcome him back, as they haven’t heard any new music from him in almost ten years! Phil’s last album was 2002’s Testify, which he supported with the soon-to-be-prophetic First Farewell Tour. Outside a brief Genesis reunion tour in 2007 and a collection of Motown covers in 2010, Phil hasn’t played or recorded any music since then.
Why the silence from the man who released such hits as “In The Air Tonight,” “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “Two Worlds?” Family. Phil walked away from the music business to spend more time with his wife, Orianne Cevey, and their two sons, Nicholas and Matthew. Phil moved to his wife’s native country of Switzerland and stayed happily retired until a nasty divorce in 2008.
Orianne took the kids to live in Miami, leaving Phil “with a lot of time on my hands to think about what happened,” he told RollingStone. “I went through a few bits of darkness; drinking too much. I killed my hours watching TV and drinking, and it almost killed me.” Thankfully, Phil said that he made it through that devastating period in his life and that he hasn’t had a drink “in three years.”
Phil is working on putting together a new tour and he’s starting work on a new album, My Life In 15 Songs. His un-retirement is not just a way for him to get back to doing what he loves. It’s also a way for him to get closer to his boys.
“My kids are now 10 and 14 and they want to see what their dad does,” Phil added. Lily Collins, Phil’s daughter from his second wife, Jill Tavelman, has gotten a chance to see her daddy play where her two stepbrothers have not. “They were in [diapers] when I was last on the road,” Phil said. “They love my music and I’d like to take them out so they can enjoy it.”
