Does Justin Bieber consider himself the new Justin Timberlake? Looks like it! The ‘Sorry’ singer sat down with UK radio host Nick Grimshaw to talk about his new album and how his career trajectory is not all that different from JT’s. Are you buying it?
Justin Bieber, 21, has made quite the musical comeback recently, transitioning from teen heartthrob to all out pop superstar in seemingly no time at all. But according to the Biebs himself, that transformation was inevitable, using Justin Timberlake’s, 34, career as a perfect example to explain how it all happened. The “Sorry” singer stopped by BBC Radio 1 on October 27, where he chatted a bit with host Nick Grimshaw about his new album, and how his sound has matured over the years. During their conversation, Nick pointed out that Justin’s single “What Do You Mean” seemed to change a lot of people’s opinions about him to which Justin agreed, crediting the fact that he’s now more in control of his creative process. To further explain his point, Justin likened his transition to that of Justin Timberlake’s and the release of his first solo album FutureSex/LoveSounds.
“Look at Justin Timberlake. You know, he was in NSYNC and of course they had an amazing sound but it was also, it was young. It was for teenagers,” Justin explained. “And I feel when he transitioned and started making ‘Sexy Back’ and stuff, he really found something that was unique to what he was feeling and what he wanted to do. So I think it takes time as an artist to develop your style and develop what you like and what you don’t like.”
Of course, this is hardy the first time the Biebs has compared himself to the great JT. Back in 2012, Justin told MTV News that he’s always admired the former boy bander, despite the fact that their comparisons aren’t totally on point. “He was young, and he did it and he was really amazing and had such amazing music,” Justin said when asked if Timberlake had influenced his music. “I can’t say I would be upset when someone compares me to him — I just feel like my music is going a completely different route. But definitely, hat goes off to him.”
Along with discussing his similarities with JT, Justin also revealed how he choose the name for his new album, Purpose, and as predicted, it has a whole lot to do with what has been going on in his life in the past couple of years. “You know, I named the album Purpose. And the reason why I named it Purposewas because for a while there I feel like I lost my purpose,” Bieber said. “And I feel like I found my purpose again. So just maybe that message to say, no matter how far you feel like you’re away from yourself or you feel like you don’t have your purpose or you don’t know what your purpose is or you feel like you lost your purpose, there’s always room to find that purpose again.”
