Don’t worry — Blake Shelton is completely aware of just how awkward the CMAs are going to be. The singer revealed during an appearance on ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’ that he’s prepared for some uncomfortable jokes about his divorce from Miranda Lambert: ‘It’s going to be awkward.’
Looks like we’re not the only ones who think the upcoming Country Music Awards are going to be a little awkward for Blake Shelton, 39, and Miranda Lambert, 31, this year. The Voice judge dropped by Late Night With Seth Meyers on October 28, admitting that he’s prepared for an uncomfortable run-in with his ex-wife, whom he divorced in July 2015: “I know it’s coming.”
“This year’s gonna be awkward at the CMAs, speaking of jokes,” Blake told the late-night host. “Because we are, it’s such a family. Everybody there is friends. There’s gotta be one about me and Miranda. [Host] Brad Paisley is not doing his job if he doesn’t look down there and go ‘Ha ha!’ You have to address the elephant in the room. We’ve had the conversations like, ‘Okay, dude. I’ll sit there and let you kick me in the face a few times.’ I know it’s coming.”
As country music fans will recall, Blake and Miranda have attended the show together since 2007, even accepting joint awards at times. This year, the two will be attending to perform separately, hitting the red carpet solo for the first time in eight years.
If that weren’t all awkward enough, the former lovers are also both up for Female/Male Vocalist of the Year awards, so it’ll definitely be interesting to see, if either of them takes home a win, if they thank the other in an acceptance speech. Oh, the tension!
Post-divorce run-ins aside, Blake is staying focused on his work on The Voice, which recently brought on Rihanna as a guest mentor. “She’s such a smart-ass,” Blake said of the “BBHMM” singer. “I never could get the upper hand with her. I was trying to get her to be a bit flirty, I mean, why not? I’m a perfect match for Rihanna. And so I was coming up with our couple name ‘Blihanna’ was one of them and ‘Rake.’” Wait, does this mean co-star Gwen Stefani has some competition in the Blake romance department now? Only time will tell.
