Lamar Odom desperately needs a new kidney — his life depends on it! Rob Kardashian is reportedly willing to go under the knife for Lamar, but an expert gives HollywoodLife.com the EXCLUSIVE details on why it may be impossible for him to give Lamar the organ he needs to live!
Lamar Odom, 35, may have miraculously recovered from his alleged drug overdose, but he’s not out of the woods yet. He still reportedly needs a new kidney, and while Rob Kardashain, 28, has allegedly offered one of his. Though, a medical expert EXCLUSIVELY tells HollywoodLife.com why Rob or even or Khloe Kardashian, 31, may not be able to save Lamar’s life.
Doctors will test Rob to see if he’s a match for Lamar. “There are two types of kidney donors,” Dr. S. Adam Ramin, urologist and medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles, EXCLUSIVELY tells HollywoodLife.com. There are “living related donors or cadaveric donors,” Dr. Admin said, explaining that “living related” donors are often genetic relatives of Lamar — like his father, Joe Odom.
These donors go through “rigorous testing” to make sure there’s “enough of an immunological match” so that Lamar’s body won’t reject the new kidney. A biological relative like Joe would be a great candidate, but Lamar’s father is old and has a history of drug use. They may then have to look to Rob or another non-biological donor. But, no matter how much someone wants to donate, if they’re not the correct genetic match, they can’t give Lamar a kidney.
If they can’t find a living-related donor, Lamar can apply to receive a kidney from a “cadaveric donor,” or a person who has passed away who agreed to donate their organs. But, on order for Lamar to get on the organ-donor list, he basically “need[s] to be cancer free, drug free, have good medical health and [have] a long life expectancy,” Dr. Ramin tells HollywoodLife.com. Even if he kicks drugs and proves he’s living clean, Dr. Ramin says it could take “6 months to 2 years” to find a match. No wonder Rob and so many others are willing to give up a kidney — Lamar might not survive that long!
Even if Khloe or Rob turns out to be the perfect match, Dr. Ramin tells HollywoodLife.com that it still may be impossible for them to give Lamar a brand new organ. “In order to qualify for a transplant, there are certain criteria a person needs [to meet],” Dr. Ramin says. “They have to have a drug free life.”
“You cannot declare yourself drug free a week ago and expect to be placed on the list” for a new kidney, Dr. Ramin tells HollywoodLife.com. With Lamar’s trouble with drugs, it’s very possible he spend “months to a year” on dialysis until he proves that he’s worthy of a brand new kidney. Meanwhile, Rob, Khloe and the rest of Lamar’s family will hope for the best.
Do you think Lamar will clean himself up in time to get a new kidney, HollywoodLifers? We wish Lamar a speedy recovery.
