The road to recovery is even longer than expected for Lamar Odom. Doctors reportedly announced that the NBA star will require a kidney transplant. How long will Lamar have to wait for this lifesaving procedure?
Lamar Odom, 35, is “definitely” in need of a kidney transplant, according to US Weekly. The dire situation calls into question how long Lamar will have to wait for the transplant, and what he’ll have to do for the transplantation to work successfully. The alleged need for a kidney transplant comes after reports from TMZ that Lamar has been suffering from kidney failure; he is currently on dialysis. Unfortunately, receiving a kidney from the donor list does not happen overnight. “[Patients] have to go through a vigorous process to get on the transplant list, physically, psychologically and mentally,” top Urologist Dr. S. Adam Ramin told HollywoodLife.com. “It can take months or years to get a kidney. It is not like you go into kidney failure and tomorrow you get a new kidney.”
Furthermore, Lamar will need to change his lifestyle in order to be eligible for a transplant. “The recipient has to be drug free, you have to make sure they would be compliant with taking the medications that are required after a transplantation. And make sure they live a life that wouldn’t jeopardize the transplanted kidney,” Dr. Ramin said. “So smoking, drinking too much and taking drugs would put the transplanted at risk.”
After nearly two weeks of suffering, and terrifying medical ordeals, Lamar is having his good days, and some bad. “He can say a few words,” a source told US Weekly. “He’s doing a tiny bit better, but he has a very long road back to full recovery — if that.” Though the need for a kidney transplant is terrifying, Lamar’s family is even more concerned about his brain injuries, according to another US Weekly source; Lamar had a reported 12 strokes, affecting his speech and motor skills.
That’s the most serious thing he’s dealing with,” the source said. Both insiders told the mag that the extent of the damage done to Lamar’s entire body is still unclear at this point. “The doctors just don’t know the extent of all the damage yet. There are still a lot of tests that need to be done,” said the first source.
“He’ll get more of his motor skills back gradually, but cognitively, he’s not where he used to be,” warned the second.
