Effortless, undone waves are an always-on-trend hairstyle for everyone from celebrities like Beyoncé to supermodels and the high-fashion set. But the official ‘cool’ girl style actually requires quite a bit of effort, which is why we turned to the pros for top styling secrets.
We love a good tousled waves hairstyle, which can instantly inject a rock ‘n’ roll vibe to even the simplest jeans and t-shirt look just as easily as it can add an effortlessly cool feel to your most formal styles. Beyoncé and Shakira have made the slightly messy, always chic style part of their regular beauty routines, and you can, too thanks to tips their stylist shared with us!

When celebrity hairstylist Kim Kimble stops by the office, you drop everything and anxiously await her arrival to bombard her with questions. Her client list includes every big name in the business from longtime favorites like Beyoncé to fresh-on-the-scene standouts like Zendaya — plus she runs several of her own salons, her hair care line and stars in her own reality TV show, L.A. Hair on WE TV in her spare time, no big deal.
Naturally, we needed to know how she gives Bey those tousled waves you see in her music videos and onstage. “To get that undone look, I’ll curl it first — not too structured, then go back and mess it up to make it a bit more edgy,” Kim told us. To get that fluffed up texture, Kim says she’ll use a dry shampoo before going in with a flat iron to deconstruct some of the curl and give it that second-day look we all love so much instantly. “I do that a lot, especially on Shakira, just flat ironing the ends,” Kim says, which gives it a more relaxed look.

“Then sometimes I’ll use a styling cream from the middle of the hair shaft, down,” Kim says if she wants to achieve a more piece-y finish to what she calls the “pop diva” hairstyle. Make sure to avoid applying the cream at the roots so you can still keep that mussed up volume at the top of your hair. Once you’re done, spritz your hair with Kim’s Bounce Back Liquid Curl Enhancer, which we’re currently obsessing over to freshen up curls and get more wear out of your waves. It also smells like a dream and is full of good-for-hair ingredients like coconut and jojoba oils and shea butter to keep hair hydrated.
