Howard Stern, out. Simon Cowell, in! The ex-‘American Idol’ judge is officially switching gears next year, and joining NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent!’
Simon Cowell is taking a seat at the America’s Got Talent table for season 11! The 56-year-old producer has quite a bit of experience hosting, and actually just revealed he first discussed joining the show with NBC five years ago, but it didn’t work out until now. But just because he’s a new dad, don’t expect a softer side than you saw on Idol!
“We’ve been talking about it for a few years, funny enough, me and NBC,” Cowell told Us magazine. “This year … everything worked. So it was perfect.” AGT is hosted by Nick Cannon, and Simon will take a spot at the table with judges Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Mel B..
As for Simon as a dad — well, that doesn’t change anything. “I’m not going to lie to people when I think they’re hopless, I just couldn’t do that! But no, of course I’m not going to be rude for the sake of being rude. That would be ridiculous. I’ll take it act by act,” he said. Of course Simon was a pretty strict judge on Idol from 2002 to 2011, and also found One Direction on The X-Factor. So, needless to say, he knows talent — he’s been behind the scenes on AGT for a long time. We also told you that Simon was looking to try out different things on AGT to draw a younger audience in, even possibly having a member of 1D judge. Of course, his back up plan was himself!
In a video on AGT’s twitter, Simon explained how much he loved producing the show for the past 10 years and always wanted to be on it! “I want to see what America’s got to offer!” He also tweeted, “The good news is America’s Got Talent is back next year and the even better news is so am I!”
