Marlene King may now be the boss on ‘Pretty Little Liars,’ but in the good old days, she created ‘Now And Then’ — and totally cast Leo in it.
Twenty years ago on Oct. 20, Now And Then hit theaters and changed everything. We fell in love with Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Gaby Hoffman and Ashleigh Aston Moore, and of course, the A-Listers who played the adult versions of the girls. But there was one A-lister who was wanted — and couldn’t do it: Leonardo DiCaprio. Marlene King actually got all the stars she wanted, except him.
“The one role that originally was different was Leonardo DiCaprio was going to play the Vietnam vet, but something happened and he had a conflict,” she told ETOnline. “I know, it’s crazy!”
Wait a minute, Leo almost played the role Brendan Fraser got? Wow, we were not expecting that. As much as we loved Devon Sawa (and he and Christina Ricci’s Casper chemistry was on point), we assumed that‘s the role Leo would have been. Of course, Brendan did a great job as “a last minute swap,” and well, could really pull off that sexy smoker thing.
And as much as we’re surprised Leo wasn’t considered for Devon’s role, Marlene is still so proud of the kiss that Devon and Christina shared over “pop.”
“[Devon and Christina’s kiss] is still one of my favorite scenes, and that was like a real memory. That was just like my first kiss when he kisses Roberta. That was like right out of my life’s story and was so true to life,” she said. “We just knew that he was so cute! I had watched Casper because somebody had mentioned Christina for the movie, and we just thought he was so adorable. They just had such good chemistry together too.” Shop Now & Then on Amazon here.
We can’t believe it’s been twenty years since Now & Then, so we’re going to run and rewatch now. Kbye!
