So sad! ABC News medical correspondent Dr. Jamie Zimmerman has been killed in a tragic accident while on vacation in Hawaii. The doctor and TV personality was crossing a river when she slipped on some rocks and was pulled out to sea. How terrifying!
Dr. Jamie Zimmerman, 31, was experiencing paradise on the north shore of Kauai when the ABC medical reporter was swept out to sea and drowned after she lost her footing at a river crossing. Her mother broke the sad news on Jamie’s Facebook page, which featured her last known picture – happily staring out at the Pacific Ocean.
“On Oct. 12 my precious daughter Jamie Lauren slipped on some rocks at the mouth of the Lumahai River on Kauai, Hawaii and was swept out to sea. Lifeguards and paramedics rushed to rescue Jamie, but were not able to resuscitate her” her mom Jordan Zimmerman revealed in a lengthy Facebook post.
“Those of you who knew Jamie or perhaps read some of her writings knew that she loved people above all else. It was her passion to be of service and teaching meditation was her calling” her mother added about the UCLA educated physician and Rhodes Scholar. According to her ABC News boss James Golston, Jamie also researched stories for the network’s medical unit and also offered meditation sessions for ABC News staff in New York.
Witnesses called authorities around 4pm on Oct. 12 after seeing Jamie helplessly being swept out to sea from the mouth of the Lumahai River. Lifeguards and paramedics who responded to the emergency found the Jamie unresponsive in the ocean about 200 yards east of the river mouth. They were unable to revive her with CPR. She had been hiking alone at the time of the accident.
Jamie’s Facebook profile shows how much she was clearly enjoying her vacation. She’s glowing in a selfie looking out at blue Pacific Ocean, grinning in sunglasses and a tank top. On Oct. 10 she posted photos of a gorgeous hike along the Napali Coast with the caption “#Kauai – paradise found.”
Our thoughts go out to the Zimmerman family and her ABC News colleagues.
