Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux pulled off quite the surprise when they announced that they were officially married on Aug. 5. How did one of Hollywood’s hottest couples manage to keep their big day hush-hush? During a visit to ‘Ellen,’ Justin revealed their successful strategy!
When you’re an A-list celeb, it’s not easy to keep anything undercover. So when Justin Theroux, 44, and Jennifer Aniston, 46, tied the knot in August without hardly anyone knowing, Justin admitted they really had to be sneaky! In fact, the actor told Ellen Degeneres that they didn’t even tell some of their guests that their wedding was happening until they arrived! Watch him explain the elaborate plan below!
Justin stopped by The Ellen Degeneres Show to promote his HBO show The Leftovers, but of course his new marriage to Jen came up! Ellen was actually invited to the wedding herself, and she pointed out that people showed up in flip flops and jeans. While that may seem strange, Justin didn’t seem to be phased…because some people thought they were attending Justin’s 44th birthday party! He admitted that while the birthday party disguise kept their wedding from being exposed to the public, it kind of backfired!
“It was actually a massive miscalculation. Because we thought we’re gonna to tell some people this and some people that and then people that really have to that have busy schedules and whatever,” Justin explained to Ellen. “So then afterwards we kind of realized that was a terrible plan. You’re basically telling half your guests ‘you’re unemployed’ and ‘we can’t trust you.’ Which is of course not the case. We just sort of put it out there…people said yes to the birthday and I’ll be there, and if they said, ‘we can’t,’ we really put more pressure on them to be at the ‘birthday.’ And then finally we’d say, listen, you need to come to the birthday.” See his hilarious explanation!
Justin added that prior to their actual nuptials, their friends would show up to get togethers expecting a surprise wedding and dressed to the nines! Although some of the guests may have been a little underdressed for the real deal, at least Jen and Justin were able to have a secret wedding, right?
Before Justin’s interview with Ellen, the couple revealed that Jimmy Kimmel officiated the ceremony and Jen’s Friends BFF Courteney Cox was her maid of honor. Other than that, details of their secret wedding have still remained fairly private. But judging by how happy Justin looked on Ellen, their big day was amazing — just like their relationship!
