Tracy Morgan is SO back, everybody! Days ahead of his return to ‘Saturday Night Live,’ the comedian made a surprise appearance at two small comedy clubs in New York City, and performed stand-up for the first time since his deadly car crash in June 2014.
Only a few dozen people were lucky enough to witness Tracy Morgan’s return to live comedy on Oct. 12! The 46-year-old popped up at the Comedy Cellar and The Stand in NYC to give his first public stand-up shows since getting severely injured in a car crash 16 months ago, and from what attendees say, it seems he hasn’t lost a beat!
The comedian gave no notice of his surprise shows, and simply showed up at both venues to take the stage. Despite the tragic consequences from his June 7, 2014 car accident, Tracy had no qualms spitting out jokes about his slow recovery. When he coughed at one point, he kidded, “That’s because of the accident,” according to an eyewitness from Refinery29, who added that he followed it up by admitting it might have also been from “smoking too much weed.”
Recording in both venues was completely prohibited, but Tracy did proudly share a photo of himself from the Comedy Cellar show. “My first time on stage in 16 months at the #ComedyCellar!” he wrote. “Picking up the pieces!” It’s so inspiring to see how Tracy is so determined and has fought so hard to get back to where he is today (the crash left him in a coma for two weeks, and he was required to use a wheelchair and walker for several months afterward).
The Monday night shows were a perfect opportunity for Tracy to practice for his upcoming gig on Saturday Night Live — he’ll be hosting the show on Oct. 17. We have no doubt that the 30 Rock star is going to to totally kill it, too. After all, he was hilarious when he shockingly showed up to the Emmy Awards on Sept. 20. He’s back, you guys!
