What is life like after being on ‘American Idol’? According to Katie Stevens, it’s not easy! Katie reflected on her ‘Idol’ days when she stopped by the HollywoodLife podcast and revealed that once she was eliminated, the show didn’t help her career take off — she was totally on her own!
Before Katie Stevens, 22, was cast as Karma on MTV’s Faking It, she competed on American Idol at just 16 years old! Despite her amazing accomplishment at such a young age, Katie isn’t afraid to admit that she struggled a bit after getting eliminated. While her career is doing amazing now, Katie really had to fend for herself once she left the Idol stage! Take a listen to the HollywoodLife podcast to hear exactly what Katie said about her post-Idol life!
Because Katie was so young when she was on season 9 of Idol, she revealed that she wasn’t expecting to win. But once she was eliminated during the Top 9 week, Katie also ran into something she didn’t expect — feeling totally lost!
“If you don’t win you’re kind of on your own a little bit. Not a little bit…you’re on your own,” she said. “I was kind of trying to do music, but the music industry is kind of in a weird place, so I was kind of in a weird place. I didn’t really want to do music anymore and I was taking acting classes, auditioning for things…nothing was sticking.”
It couldn’t have been easy to go through all of that at just 16, especially after national success with Idol! Katie doesn’t regret taking part in the show, but she revealed to us that she isn’t necessarily thrilled that some of her teenage years were captured on television. Plus, since she was so young, some people don’t even realize she was a contestant!
“Anytime I ever hear anything from American Idol I get so embarrassed because I feel like I’m listening to myself going through puberty. It is true, I was 16 when I was on the show,” Katie revealed. She continued, “I always say that because I was 16 and I was the person still finding myself when I was on American Idol, I think I was forgettable on the show. But that kind of worked in my favor because now I’ve been able to go on and do things like Faking It and American Idol has kind of been like a side note, it’s like people don’t even associate it.”
Although we certainly don’t think Katie was a forgettable contestant, we do think it’s pretty awesome that she has been able to make an acting career for herself after being on Idol. She may have felt on her own after getting eliminated, but she definitely didn’t let that stop her from having an amazing career!
