This is sure to be one epic battle between the United States and Mexico’s soccer teams! The players will face off in the CONCACAF Cup on Oct. 10 to determine who will represent CONCACAF in the 2017 Confederations Cup. Watch the whole thing go down here!
Only one team from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football will be able to represent in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, and the U.S. and Mexico are battling it out to see who gets the spot! Watch a live stream of the CONCACAF Cup right here!
As the 2013 and 2015 winners of the Gold Cup, respectively, the United States and Mexico will battle it out to make moves toward the World Cup. Before this year, the winner of the most recent Gold Cup, which in this case, would’ve been Mexico, automatically would’ve represented CONCACAF in the Confederations Cup, but a new rule stated that a team must win both Gold Cups in a four-year World Cup cycle to qualify. Since the U.S. won in 2013, this one-game playoff will determine who takes the next step. (CLICK HERE TO WATCH USA VS. MEXICO IN THE CONCACAF CUP).
The game will go down at 9:30 ET at the Rose Bowl in California, and is expected to attract a MAJOR crowd. It should be a pretty great matchup and there is definitely a lot on the line! Interestingly, Mexico beat the U.S. the last time the teams met at the Rose Bowl four years ago, but in the six matches since, El Tri has never come out on top, with three losses and three draws.
In the 2015 Gold Cup, the U.S. was knocked out in the semifinals, paving the way for Mexico to take on Jamaica in the finals, eventually winning the whole thing. “I was very upset with what happened in the Gold Cup, very upset, but that’s in the past, it’s gone, it’s out the window,” Jurgen Klinsmann, the U.S. head coach, said. “Now we have a sold-out crowd and we have a lot of guests coming in that live here.”
