While researching his HBO documentary Montage of Heck, director Brett Morgen uncovered an unprecedented amount of Kurt Cobain‘s then-unheard solo demos and a few rarities. Brett has compiled the amazing finds into a postmortem Kurt Cobain solo album, Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings, which includes something special: Kurt’s gorgeous cover of The Beatles’ “And I Love Her.”
With just his gravelly voice and an acoustic guitar in hand, Kurt’s take on the Beatles classic is a perfect embodiment of what he was: genuine, raw and sorrowful. The song is an emotional, haunting listen, knowing that it wasn’t supposed to be heard, as Kurt took his own life around the time that it was recorded.
Brett unearthed the song on a random tape and included it in his documentary. In April 2015, it was released online, but taken down shortly afterward. Now, it’s back for our listening pleasure officially, on Spotify. While “And I Love Her” is available online, the cover will also be given a 7-inch vinyl release along with an early version of “Sappy.”
