So tragic. The victims of the horrific Northern Arizona University shooting, which left one dead and three wounded on Oct. 9, have been identified. Our hearts our with them and their loved ones during this heartbreaking time.
The deadly shooting at Northern Arizona University’s Flagstaff campus has claimed the life of Colin Brough, and left Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek, and Nicholas Piring injured. Gunman, student Steven Jones, 18, is in custody after the tragic attack, but the campus has been left grieving over the horrific and unthinkable crime.
“We are, of course, shocked and deeply saddened by the circumstances that bring us together this morning,” NAU president Rita Cheng said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and our entire Lumberjack family. We have assured the NAU community that the campus was immediately secured by our police department and classes will go on as scheduled. I am grateful for the collaborative work of our law enforcement officials on campus and in the city of Flagstaff who are investigating this isolated, and unprecedented, incident.”
Gunshots were heart on the Flagstaff campus at 1:20 a.m. PT, right outside Mountain View Hall, which is a dorm that houses students involved in Greek organizations. Members of the fraternity Delta Chi are confirmed to have been involved, although it is not confirmed whether or not the gunman or any of the victims were a member of the frat. Steven was taken into custody after halting his actions with a handgun, and the three wounded victims were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment.
The official NAU Twitter account made sure to update students and faculty throughout this scary event, with the first tweet coming in just an hour after the gunshots went off. Soon after, the school confirmed, “Reported shooter situation is stabilized and the shooter is in custody. Details to follow.” The death and injury found were confirmed in the next tweet.
This horrifying shooting happened just one week after Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Arizona. His massacre killed nine and left nine injured, and Chris wound up turning the gun on himself after the attack. President Obama is heading to Roseburg, Oregon, where UCC is located, on the same day as the NAU tragedy.
Our thoughts remain with the families of these victims during this time. HollywoodLifers, leave your condolences in the comments section below.
