‘Pan’ not only blew our minds, but it also included an epic scene with music we were not expecting. Luckily, we caught up with the director after a screening who revealed just how ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ landed in ‘Pan.’
Before Pan began filming, director Joe Wright actually took some of the team to “pirate bootcamp,” he told Hollywoodlife.com exclusively at the amazing after party of the New York screening. There, he started playing around with music — and although it’s a kid’s movie, he landed on some adult hits.
“The pirates all kind of got into character and costume and all of that stuff, and we were trying different music that would make the fright atmosphere for the pirates — nothing felt quite tough enough,” Joe said. “So, we then put in a bit of old fashioned punk, and that seemed to work. We liked it so much, we thought it’d be fun for the movie. One of the great things about doing a kids’ film is that the craziest ideas somehow have a place.”
And that it did. During the movie, which stars the amazing 12-year-old Levi Miller as Pan, Garrett Hedlund as Hook, and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, there is one scene in particular which features Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and The Ramones‘ “Blitzkrieg Bop.”
Writer Jason Fuchs also tol dus that he was blown away by Joe’s idea, tool. “He came back [from bootcamp], and he was like, ‘We have an idea; we‘re gonna do this, we’re gonna sing this.’ I was like, ‘Wait what?,'” Jason said. However, he trusted in Joe. “It grew on me, it’s one of my favorite parts of the movie — but that is pure Joe.”
We had to bring up the possibility of doing another Pan movie, since this one was so great. “There’s definitely more of that world I’d like to write about, so fingers majorly crossed,” Jason added. Well, we will keep ours crossed too! Are you going to see Pan, HollywoodLifers?
