What a shady move on Lucious’ part! After Cookie refused to end her start up music label, Lucious decided to take matters into his own hands and steal one of her artists!
Don’t hate the player, hate the game! Lucious Lyon (Terrance Howard) is just doing his best to keep his Empire, well, the only Empire around. Even if that means he has to play dirty! Cookie was ready to debut Ménage a Trois, the girl group that Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) put together, when Lucious stole the leading lady right from underneath her!

Hakeem worked so hard on curating his girl group! But, we all should’ve seen that one coming because Valentina (Becky G) said at the very beginning that she wanted to be her own artist. Valentina leaving Lyon Dynasty wasn’t the only crazy thing that happened during the third episode.
Lucious Declares War On His Family
On his first day out of prison, Lucious invited his whole family to enjoy a nice family dinner. However, Cookie was very suspicious of her ex-husband’s intentions and she definitely wasn’t buying Jamal’s (Jussie Smollett) explanation of Lucious wanting to see his family. While Jamal was partially right, Lucious came out and told Cookie he was giving her, as well as everyone else who is a part of Lyon Dynasty, one last chance to end the company.
Obviously Cookie refused to and that meant the start of a war between Lucious and Cookie. The mother of three decided she had enough of dinner and in true Cookie fashion, she made quite the exit. Cookie subtly grabbed the table runner on the dining table and slowly pulled ir, causing the food to fall to the floor behind her as she leaves the room.
After the eventful dinner, Lucious met up with Anika (Grace Gealey) the next day at Leviticus to talk business with her. He was interested in asking his former lover to help him take down Lyon Dynasty. When Anika asked him what he was thinking of, we totally thought she was going to backstab Cookie because, well lets face it, Cookie hasn’t been the nicest to Anika. But, Anika proved all of us wrong and went back to Lyon Dynasty to tell Cookie that Lucious was planning on throwing a party for himself at Leviticus.
Cookie Crashes Lucious’ Party
Can I just say that Cookie is the queen of entering and exiting rooms? At Lucious’ party, she rudely interrupted Jamal’s performance with Pitbull — which, was a great song by the way and I definitely need to add that to one to my iTunes library — to introduce Hakeem to the stage. But he wasn’t alone! In the middle of his hot song, Hakeem was joined by Timbaland! Dare I say this song is a lot better than “Drip Drop?”
Eventually Cookie and her crew were escorted out of the club. But before the scene ended, the camera panned to Lucious and he actually had a smirk on his face! Either he figured out his next move, realized Anika betrayed him, or totally met his match because that performance from Hakeem was HOT.
Andre Tells Cookie & Lucious About His Unborn Child
With all the drama that went on, there has to be SOMETHING good, right? Well, Andre (Trai Byers) dropped the news on Cookie after she asked him for the umpteenth time to reconsider coming back to Lyon Dynasty. After he told her no in the nicest way possible, he told her that he belongs at Empire because it’s a proud legacy he wants to leave behind to the child he and wife Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday)!
Cookie was super overjoyed by that news and congratulated her son! Although she would’ve wanted him to stay with her, she understood and told Andre to tell Lucious about his bundle of joy that’s on the way. Her son refused at first, saying he didn’t want to use his child as leverage, but Cookie was able to persuade him.
Later, we see Andre meeting Lucious in his home. Seeing as this is their second meeting in the episode, Lucious mentioned that Andre was very persistent. It was then that Andre told his father is going to be a grandfather. Lucious was very happy with the news, but then remembered his son’s disease. He wondered why Andre wasn’t worried about his child inheriting his disorder and that’s when Andre said he didn’t think bi-polar disorder was hereditary.
At that moment, we see a flashback of Lucious and his mom (Kelly Rowland) who we learned was bi-polar in the first episode. She was seen showering her son with gifts one minute and the next she was sitting on the floor surrounded by tissue paper with a solemn look on her face. We return to present day and Lucious wiped the worried look off his face and embraced Andre.
But, that wasn’t the end of the moment. Lucious then tells Andre that he can’t believe his son would use his own child as leverage to try and get back into Empire. That totally wasn’t his intention, but Lucious took it that way and made him leave! So rude.
Lucious Tries To Sign Frieda, Frank Gathers’ Daughter
Remember the girl who rapped for her dad, Frank Gathers (Chris Rock), in jail? Well, Lucious insisted on signing her to Empire and made sure to tell Jamal to do whatever he can to get Frieda on the label. Unfortunately, Jamal wasn’t able to do so because Frieda wanted Lucious to be there. So, she left the conference room with her entourage.
Upset by this, Lucious decides to take matters into his own hands and visits the hood where Frieda is living. When he shows up, the young girl is engaged in a rap battle in the middle of an abandoned parking lot with an older guy. Things escalated very quickly when Frieda’s opponent dropped a line dissing Frieda’s dad. She grabs her concealed weapon, but thankfully Lucious was able to stop it! He pleads with her to come with him so he can help her, but she doesn’t say anything and runs away with the police come.
Cookie Whips Ménage a Trois Into Shape Before Their Radio Appearance
Ugh, she worked so hard to get the girls of Ménage a Trois to learn their choreograph and everything! The girls were definitely lacking that group chemistry, but Cookie had to work quickly because Hakeem revealed on Sway’s radio show that he was working on a girl group and that they were getting ready to drop their first single.
Things were a little rocky from the beginning because Valentina was being a huge diva. Luckily for Hakeem, Cookie doesn’t play and totally put the aspiring songstress in her place! She made the girls work hard and eventually they got along and were able stay in sync while dancing.
On the day of their debut, Hakeem and Cookie were waiting around for Valentina at the radio station when Lucious showed up. He revealed that Cookie wouldn’t be able to get any of her artists music played on the air because he owns the airwaves now. Well, not the whole thing, but he knows a percentage of it which means he also gets a say in who gets played on air. Not only that, but he totally dropped the bomb that he signed Valentina to Empire!
Shocker. It’s not surprising to see Valentina went along with it. After all, Empire is much bigger than Lyon Dynasty and if she wants stardom, she’s going to have to sign with a huge label to get her music and likeliness out there!
