Rihanna holds nothing back in her ‘Vanity Fair’ interview…even when it comes to the most controversial topics. That includes a discussion about Rachel Dolezal, who was highly criticized for identifying as black even though she’s white. But she has RiRi in her corner now! Find out what the singer said to show her support.
Rachel Dolezal has someone very special on her side months after she was widely criticized for pretending to be black. In her lengthy cover story for Vanity Fair, Rihanna, 27, publicly reveals her support for the former NAACP leader, and insists there’s nothing wrong with what she did.
“I think she was a bit of a hero,” the “BBHM” singer tells the mag. “Because she kind of flipped on society a little bit. Is it such a horrible thing that she pretended to be black? Black is a great thing, and I think she legit changed people’s perspective a bit and woke people up.”
In case you forgot, Rachel, who had claimed to be a black woman throughout her adult life, was outed by her family, who revealed she had white parents and showed pictures of her with much lighter skin when she was younger. But Rachel stood by her decision to identify as black, and explained that doing so wasn’t a “mockery black face performance.” She also added that she’s connected to her identity on a “real” level, and has “had to go there with the experience.”
The whole thing blew over pretty quickly in the media, but for the most part, Rachel seemed to be criticized for essentially lying, which is why it’s a pretty big deal that RiRi is openly taking her side. This was just one major topic she touched upon in her very open interview, too — she also dished on her tumultuous relationship with Chris Brown, 26, and even admitted she’ll care about him until the day she dies. Deep!
