No freedom for Bobby Shmurda! The rapper, who was arrested in Dec. 2014, has been sent back to jail after a fifth attempt to reverse his bail denial on Oct. 5, and he’ll spend several more months there before his trial even begins.
Bobby Shmurda, 21, appeared in court on Oct. 5 with the hopes that a judge would approve his request to be released on bail — but his motion was denied once again. And, on top of that, the rapper’s trial was pushed back, so he’ll have to spend even longer behind bars than planned.
The 21-year-old was arrested in December with members of his friends in GS9 after a long-term investigation by the police into drug-trafficking and gang-related shootings. He was charged with drug-dealing and weapons possession and denied bail, a decision he attempted to reverse three times before the Oct. 5 go at it.
During the hearing, Judge James Burke pushed Bobby’s trial date back to Feb. 22, which is still several months away. Once that decision was made, Bobby’s new lawyer, Alex Spiro, requested that his client be released from jail until the trial date, but the prosecutor pointed out that bail has already been denied four times, and in that time, the case against the rapper has only gotten stronger. Yikes!
Ultimately, Judge Burke agreed with the prosecution, and Bobby was sent back behind bars. During a preliminary hearing in July, Bobby was offered a plea deal for an eight-year sentence as punishment for the drug and weapon charges, but he turned it down. Now, he faces up to 25 years in prison if he’s found guilty.
Bobby was arrested on Dec. 17, 2014, along with 14 other members of his GS9 crew. The group was allegedly connected to a drug and firearm ring, and police had had them under surveillance for some time before putting the handcuffs on.
HollywoodLifers, do you think it’s fair that Bobby is still being denied bail?
