Amazing! William C. Campbell, Satoshi Omura and Youyou Tu have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. These scientists discovered drugs that have both reduced the death rate of Malaria and treated some of the most disfiguring symptoms of parasitic diseases!
Close to half a million people die from Malaria alone every year, but the work of scientists William C. Campbell, 85, Satoshi Omura, 80, and Youyou Tu, 84, may give these poor victims a chance to survive! The discoveries made by these brilliant scientific minds have nearly cured Malaria and other parasitic diseases, which is why they’ve been awarded the Nobel Prize!
The Nobel committee bestowed William, Satoshi and Youyou the award in Physiology or Medicine for discovering “therapies that have revolutionized the treatment of some of the most devastating parasitic diseases,” reports the New York Times. Youyou’s work led to the drug Artemisinin, a “novel therapy” that radically dropped the death rates from Malaria. William and Satoshi worked with Youyou’s findings to create Avermectin and Ivermectin, drugs which have nearly eradicated “river blindness” and drastically reduced the rate of filariasis, or painful, disfiguring swelling in the legs and lower body.
Youyou made her discovery after she consulted ancient Chinese writing, finding clues that led to her finding the Artemisia herb. Her drug, Artemisinin, is now considered a “first-line treatment” to combat malaria, and is known to save over 100,000 lives a year.
“Artemisinin represents a new class of antimalarial agents that rapidly kill the Malaria parasites at an early state of their development,” the Nobel Assembly said, reports CNN. “These two discoveries have provided humankind with powerful new means to combat these debilitating diseases that affect hundreds of millions of people annually.”
This is amazing! These horrible parasites plague a third of the world’s population, particularly in Africa, South Asia and Latin America. Malaria is particularly cruel, killing more than 450,000 yearly — most of which are children. Now, with Youyou, Satoshi and William’s work, they have a chance to live a full life!
Congratulations to Youyou, Satoshi and William! Leave your own congratulations to these great minds below, HollywoodLifers! Are you excited that we’re closer to eradicating Malaria?
