Chris Mintz, the heroic army veteran who put his life on the line to confront the gunman at Umpqua Community College, has spoken out, reaching out to the other victims of the brutal massacre. What a remarkable man.
Chris Mintz, 30, risked life and limb to attempt stopping alleged gunman Chris Harper Mercer, 27, during the gruesome shooting at Umpqua Community College on October 1, getting shot seven times in the process. The hero is alive and well, and has shared best wishes to the other victims of the deadly disaster. Click through to see his message.
“Hope the others injured and their families are doing well, goodnight for me,” Chris wrote in a Facebook post on October 2. It’s another stunning show of compassion for the Army veteran and father who put himself before the lives of his classmates to confront the sadistic assassin trying to end their innocent lives. Though he’s sitting in the hospital recovering from seven gunshot wounds, and two broken legs, he’s compelled to check on the others who have suffered.
To others, it was unsurprising that Chris would act so fearlessly in the face of danger. A former soldier raising an autistic son, Chris is a loving, selfless individual, who held the door of his classroom shut to block the gunman from entering, even though he was being shot through the door. Once the shooter entered, he begged him not to shoot again — it was his severely disabled son’s sixth birthday. It’s incredibly heartbreaking to know that he had to go through this, and so moving that his thoughts were only about his little son.
“We’re just so thankful he’s alive; none of the bullets hit any major organs,” Chris’ aunt, Wendy Kay Mintz, told PEOPLE. “Both his legs were hit and broken. He was shot in the stomach, the back and his hand. One bullet traveled down his spine, and became lodged in his hip. The doctors are just going to leave it there.”
We’re so thankful, too. It’s nice to hear a bit of good news in the midst of such awful tragedy. The massacre at UCC, in which nine people were killed and another nine wounded, was a murderous rampage in which the gunman went from classroom to classroom, shooting students point blank after demanding they tell him their religious affiliation. Before pulling the trigger, he told them they would “see God in a second.”
It’s a nauseating, cowardly act that is just so senseless. These precious innocent lives were taken just because of the agenda of one deranged man. Alleged shooter Chris (Harper Mercer) posted a manifesto the night before the shooting outlining his allegiance to Satan and a number of sickening thoughts.
Our thoughts remain with Chris and his loved ones as he recovers from his injuries.
