Even the father of Oregon shooter, Chris Harper-Mercer, is completely shocked and confused over the tragic massacre that took place at Umpqua Community College on Oct. 1. Find out what he had to say over the ‘devastating’ tragedy.
The entire country is devastated over the horrific shooting at an Oregon college on Oct. 1, and that includes shooter Chris Harper-Mercer’s own father, Ian Mercer. Ian issued a brief comment about the massacre, which left ten (including Chris) dead and at least seven injured, and admitted he would have never seen this coming from his son.
“I am just as shocked as anybody at what happened today,” Ian said outside his Tarzana, California home. “I can’t answer any questions right now. I don’t want to answer any questions right now. Obviously, it’s been a devastating day. Devastating for me and my family.”
Ian lives in California with his wife and step-children, while Chris had relocated to Oregon to live with his mother. Little information is known about the relationship between Chris and his dad, but it is reported that he’s very close with his mom. Ian’s stepdaughter, Carmen Nesnick, had only met her stepbrother a few times, but said she, too, was completely shocked by what he’d done.
“All he ever did was put everybody before himself,” she explained. “He wanted everyone to be happy. No matter if he was sad or mad, he would always try to cheer up everybody.” Carmen may have had a warped view of her stepbrother, though, because the act he committed on Thursday was more horrific than we could even imagine.
Interestingly, Carmen said, to her knowledge, Chris isn’t religious or anti-religion. However, witnesses from UCC said he asked his victims their religion before firing shots, and those who said they were Christian were shot. We are absolutely devastated over this tragedy, and our thoughts remain with the Roseburg community during this difficult time.
