Fans of ‘The Daily Show’ were likely slapping their knees while watching Trevor Noah’s premiere episode on Sept. 28, as the host joked about why he wasn’t the ‘ideal’ choice to host the late night talk show. But if you ask us, Jon Stewart left the show in good hands!
Trevor Noah was on fire during his premiere episode of The Daily Show on Sept. 28! The South African-born host, 31, had big shoes to fill before tonight’s episode, but his jokes were so funny that we barely missed former host Jon Stewart, 52. No offense to him, of course.
During Trevor’s opening monologue, he addressed his mentor Jon Stewart, why there are so few female late night talk show hosts, and why the network chose him as Jon’s successor. And it was then that we realized Trevor was the perfect choice to host The Daily Show after Jon’s departure.
“I can only assume that this is as strange for you as it is for me. Jon Stewart was more than just a late-night host, he was often our voice, our refuge, and in many ways, our political dad. And it’s weird, because Dad has left. And now it feels like the family has a new step-dad—and he’s black, which is not ideal,” Trevor hilariously joked during his monologue.
He also thanked Jon by saying, “Thank you, Jon. Thank you for believing in me. I’m not quite sure what you saw in me, but I’ll work hard every day to find it. And I’ll make you not look like the crazy old dude who left his inheritance to some random kid from Africa.” To watch Trevor’s full monologue, watch the video above!
Kevin Hart was Trevor’s first guest, and as expected, it was hilarious. Kevin gifted Trevor with a box full of ties, which Trevor didn’t seem enthused by, and then they talked about why he has taken up running. It was a very funny conversation and set the tone for what’s to come on Trevor’s version of The Daily Show. We approve!
Trevor also has a number of big names lined up for the rest of his first week. Tinder co-founder Whitney Wolfe will be in on Sept. 29. GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie will guest on Sept. 30. Ryan Adams, who just released his Taylor Swift cover album, will end the week on Oct. 1.

Trevor revealed to us at the 2015 Emmy Awards how he was preparing to host the show. “If I ever get stuck for like a day, I will text Jon,” he told HollywoodLife.com. So far, I haven’t had to do that. I think I will talk to him before the launch of the show to seek some advice and wisdom, which he has a lot of, and I would be happy to do that!”
