Pope Francis first trip to the United States is already well underway, and his Holiness is showing no signs of slowing down. After touching down in the U.S. for the first time on Sept. 22, Pope Francis will continue his tour (by Popemobile, of course) on Sept. 23 with the official Papal Parade along the Ellipse and the National Mall — you can watch the procession right here!
On the morning of September 23, Pope Francis was honored with a White House welcoming ceremony, and met with President Obama, making him just the third Pope to meet with the President of the United States in history! Immediately following their meeting, Pope Francis began his procession along the Ellipses and the National Mall, marking the first official Papal Parade — a momentous occasion, whether you’re excited about his visit or not. The day started off with a grand ceremony that made Pope Francis’ arrival in the United States well known to the entire world. The pope stood side-by-side with President Obama, honored with the military band’s renditions of both the Vatican national anthem, as well as the Star Spangled Banner. Afterward, President Obama gave a stirring speech that touched on everything the pope has done to try to make the world a better place.
“We thank you and welcome you with joy and gratitude to the United States,” President Obama said. “What a beautiful day the Lord has made.” What a moving thing to see before Pope Francis begins his tour of the United States. His warm welcoming at the White House was the perfect precursor to his awesome tour around the National Mall.
After leaving D.C., the Pope heads to New York City from the evening of Sept. 24 through Sept. 25 and ends in Philadelphia on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. While in NYC, he’ll hold a special mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and at Madison Square Garden, plus a procession through Central Park. Now, that’s a busy man!
