Fans of Pope Francis eagerly await his first visit to the United States, but Susan Sarandon thinks he should just stay away! The ‘Thelma & Louise’ actress fears that a crazy person might do the unthinkable and ‘assassinate’ the Pope when he visits America!
Yikes! Susan Sarandon, 68, won an Oscar for her role in Dead Man Walking, and according to her, the movie’s title also describes Pope Francis, 78! The head of the Catholic Church will make his first trip to the United States since becoming Pope. While many are excited for the Pope’s visit, Susan’s afraid that while he’s in the country, someone is going to try to kill him!
“I think they’re going to assassinate him,” Susan told The New York Daily News on Sept. 20, explaining that the Pope’s views have made him a target. “I think he’s done some major, major cleansing of the whole [Catholic] system,” she added. Pope Francis has expressed views that have gone against years of Catholic Church doctrine, like saying he and his followers shouldn’t “judge” gay people, reports Catholic Vote.
The Pope will visit Washington D.C. from Sept. 22 — 24, New York City from Sept. 24 — 25 and Philadelphia from Sept. 26 — 27. Susan hopes he survives the tour! “I love this Pope. He’s humble…he doesn’t live in the palatial whatever,” she said. “I think he’s a Pope of the people.“
Unfortunately, not everyone is a Pope Francis fanatic like Susan. “I think the Pope is wrong,” said New Jersey governor and 2016 presidential candidate, Chris Christie, while on CNN’s State of the Union. Before coming to America, Pope Francis visited Cuba and met with Fidel Castro. Chris, who is Catholic, did not like the head of his church meeting with the former-Communist dictator. “The fact that [the pope’s] infallibility is on religious matters, not on political ones,” Chris said, adding, “I just happen to disagree with the Pope on this one.”
It’s not unrealistic to think that someone might try to kill Pope Francis. It’s happened before! Mehmet Ali Agca attempted to kill Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981 in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. Pope John Paul II was shot four times, but he survived!
Mehmet said he was assigned to kill the Pope by the Turkish mafia, but there are many conspiracy theories surrounding the attack. Pope John Paul II recovered and he forgave Mehmet. He even asked the Italian government to pardon his would-be-killer! Here’s hoping that Pope Francis’s visit goes without incident!
What do you think about Susan’s comments, HollywoodLifers? Do you think the Pope will be safe in America?
