Chillling new details have emerged about the 2007 home invasion that left a Connecticut mother and her two daughters dead. Dr. William Petit, the only survivor from the attack, revealed in a new book that he was awake and tied to a pole while he listened to his wife get raped upstairs.
This is one memory Dr. William Petit, 58, will never be able to forget. Dr. Petit lost his family in 2007 after Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes broke into his home, raped and murdered William’s wife Joanna Hawke-Petit, 48, and set their two daughters, Michaela, 11, and Hayley, 17, on fire. Eight years after the horrific event, William shared new details about what happened the night his family was brutally killed.

We can’t imagine how difficult it must’ve been for William to share details from the night his family was murdered. In the new book The Rising, Murder, Heartbreak, and the Power of Human Resilience in an American Town, by Ryan D’Agostino, William shared horrifying new details about what went down during the terrifying attack. After being beaten with a baseball bat, Dr. Petit revealed was tied to a basement pole with a quilt thrown over him.
After hours of agonizing pain and drifting in and out of consciousness, he finally heard his wife’s voice upstairs trying to reason with her captors. Ryan writes: “He is witnessing his wife, who must be petrified, having a conversation with two men who broke into their home and beat his skull with a bat.”
William Revealed He Listened To His Wife’s Rape
William says he heard a “thump, thump, thump” coming from the living room. “He can’t bring himself to imagine that what he hears is the sound of his wife being raped on their living room floor,” Ryan writes. Jennifer was then strangled to death by her rapists.
Although the doctor was beaten very badly, he managed to escape and flee to a neighbor’s house. By the time he tried to get help, it was too late for his family. After killing Jennifer, both daughters were tied to their beds and their rooms were then set on fire. All three of his family members perished. The men were immediately captured and were convicted of murder in 2011. After years of grieving, Dr. Petit has since remarried and now has a toddler son, William Jr.
