This is huge! Ever since dropping “What Do You Mean?” on Aug. 28, Justin has been promoting it heavily, and it looks like all of his hard work has finally paid off. The track — which he’s deemed his official “comeback” single — became just the 23rd song ever to start at No. 1, launching with over 337,000 paid downloads, not to mention the more than 20 million streams it racked up on Spotify. With the track, Justin is now the youngest male artist to ever have a single debut at the top spot on the chart, beating out previous title holder, Baauer (“Harlem Shake”), by just two months.
“I am thrilled for Justin, who put so much heart, soul and hard work into creating and launching this song,” Steve Bartels, Def Jam CEO, told Billboard. “I’m also very proud of the way the Scooter Braun team and the Def Jam family came together to execute this effort, with the vision and the goal of Justin’s first-ever Hot 100 chart-topper. [It’s] a reminder of what an important global star Justin has become, with worldwide chart milestones being achieved daily as the song resonates. Today’s Hot 100 No. 1 is an historic accomplishment, yet it’s only the beginning of the excitement that lies ahead for Beliebers across the globe.”

The new single may be his first chart-topper, but Bieber is certainly no stranger to the upper echelons of the Hot 100. The song is his seventh top ten hit—and his second this year, as he was the featured vocalist on Diplo and Skrillex’s “Where Are You Now”—and his 47th appearance in the top 100, according to Billboard.
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Justin performed the single for the first time at the VMAs on Aug. 30 where he famously broke down into tears after being “overwhelmed” by the outpour of love and support he felt from his fans.
