NBA legend Darryl Dawkins, the player known as ‘Chocolate Thunder’ has passed away at the age of 58 from an apparent heart attack. This is such sad news.
Darryl Dawkins, a true force in the NBA, suffered a heart attack on August 27 and passed away due to the cardiac arrest, according to his family. The dunk legend, who played in the NBA until 1989, was pronounced dead at 11:19am after a family member called 911 and emergency responders rushed him to the hospital. Darryl will sorely be missed.
Early reports of Darryl’s death were uncertain about the cause, aside from the fact that nothing suspicious had occurred, and that no foul play was involved. In the afternoon, Darryl’s family released a statement that Darryl had suffered a heart attack, and said, “More than anything Darryl accomplished in his basketball career … he was most proud of his role and responsibility as a husband and father.”
A representative for the Philadelphia 76ers, the team for which Darryl was drafted to right out of high school in 1975, spoke to TMZ about their unimaginable loss.
“We’ve lost a dear friend and an iconic figure, both on and off the court. We remember fondly not only his thunderous dunks, but more importantly his powerful presence and personality. Simply put, Darryl Dawkins was beloved—by his family, friends, former teammates and his fans all over the globe. Chocolate Thunder will always have a special place in our hearts. His family is in our thoughts and prayers.”
Darryl was a powerhouse on the court, the man who made monster dunks look easy — shattering two backboards in 1979. The legacy of this man who changed basketball to this very day will live on forever. Rest in peace, Darryl.
