Happy birthday, Kobe Bryant! The Lakers great is turning 37 today, August 23. After a year of crafting his game and hanging with his family, we think Kobe definitely has reason to celebrate!
Kobe Bryant is turning 37 today, August 23! We’ve seen the basketball star grow and thrive so much in his sport within the last year, even when contending with an injury. At just 37, he’s a living legend! On his special day, let’s help him celebrate all he’s accomplished!
Something spectacular happened with Kobe in the past year: he surpassed the amazing Michael Jordan as the third all-time highest scoring player in the NBA. Not a small feat! In a game on December 14, 2014, Kobe made a free throw in the second quarter that pushed him past Michael’s standing 32,292 points. Now, he just has to beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Karl Malone to ascend to become the champion. You can do it, Kobe!
Sadly, we might not get to see him take that throne. Back in January 2015, Kobe started hinting that he was considering retirement from the NBA. The 16-time All Star, who is in his 19th season with the LA Lakers (he’s seriously been playing with them since 1996!), told the Los Angeles Times that while he wasn’t certain, retirement has crossed his mind; he said his body was “hurting like crazy around the clock.” A good reason, but still disappointing for NBA fans.
In May 2015, Lakers manager Mitch Kupchak said that “this is it” for Kobe’s time with the team, and many believe that means Kobe’s going ahead with retiring completely. If that’s true, we hope you have an amazing year doing whatever you want, Kobe! Basketball, or just hanging with your family — it’s going to be great! We’re waiting with bated breath to hear what happens next!
HollywoodLifers, help us wish Kobe a happy birthday in the comments!
