This is so sweet. Drake has paid his condolences to one of his biggest fans who died during a school sports trip to Vancouver. See the rapper’s heartfelt message here.
Drake, 28, has been known to use his Instagram account for everything from showing off his sexy shirtless pics to showcasing clips from his latest music video. But the Canadian-born rapper took to the social media platform on July 20 to offer his condolences to a deceased fan, Jamal Ottun, and what he wrote is truly moving.
“Heard this young man was a big fan,” Drake captioned a black and white photo of the late Ottun. “Rest In Peace Jamal. Watch over me from way up above!” The post was liked over 190,000 times in less than 24 hours. Sadly, the British teen drowned while swimming in Shawnigan Lake, in Vancouver Island on July 19, while he was on tour with his school’s rugby team. As tributes poured in following his death, friends and family started the #DrakeNoticeJamal hashtag on social media in hopes of reaching out to Drake, who was one of Ottun’s favorite rappers. It didn’t take long before the hashtag was trending in the UK, racking up more than 30,000 tweets and counting from around the world.
Many of the 17-year-old’s friends and fellow Drake supporters took to Twitter on July 20 to commend the rapper on his moving tribute. “The way people came together to make #DrakeNoticeJamal happen is awe-inspiring,” wrote one Twitter user. Another shared his appreciation for the rapper’s acknowledgement by writing, “Jamal passed and the world seemed so dark. But all of u to help achieve #DrakeNoticeJamal just showed me how much beauty there is in the world.”
Kudos to Drake for taking the time to honor one of his biggest fans. We’re sure Utton’s friends and family are truly appreciative of the simple gesture.
