Sadly, Caitlyn Jenner being honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS was overlooked by some people because her journey isn’t seen as courageous. D.L. Hughley was one of them and he wasn’t afraid to voice his disapproval of Cait receiving the award.
D.L. Hughley, 52, wasn’t the first to say he didn’t think Caitlyn Jenner, 65, wasn’t worthy of receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, and sadly he won’t be the last. The comedian made it very clear that the former Olympian didn’t deserve the honor because what she’s going through isn’t as courageous as what Arthur Ashe had to deal with.
The comedian went on to list off all of the amazing things Arthur Ashe has done in his life, saying he was a symbol for courage. But when it came to comparing the two, he didn’t really have much to say. “Caitlyn Jenner put on a dress, it’s not the same thing,” D.L. told TMZ. “I don’t think it’s the same. I think that girl Lauren Hill was courage in the name of sports.” The Arthur Ashe Courage Award was modeled after the athlete’s spirit. It’s usually given to someone who, ‘possesses strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost,’ which makes Cait the perfect recipient. But according to, D.L. Hughes, she and Arthur ‘have very little in common.’
That wasn’t all the 51-year-old had to say about Cait. He also went on to express his confusion about the media’s take on beauty. “In the last month we had the media tell us Caitlyn Jenner was beautiful and Serena Williams looks like a man,” the comedian ranted. “I think Serena is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen on the tennis court and Bruce Jenner looks like every P.E. teacher I ever had.” While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, D.L.’s comment wasn’t very nice.
Kris Jenner Thought Caitlyn’s Speech Was ‘Very Brave’
Although Kris Jenner, 59, wasn’t present to see Caitlyn receive her ESPYS honor, she still showed her support by watching Cait’s speech after it was made. Kris may have felt dissed when Caitlyn didn’t extend an offer to her ex-wife to be present, the Kardashian momager had nothing but nice things to say about her ex’s speech. “I think it was amazing and very brave,” Kris told Us Weekly. “I think she looked beautiful.”
HollywoodLifers, do you think D.L. Hughley was being disrespectful when he voiced his opinion about Caitlyn receiving the Arthur Ashe award?
