Not cool, Bob Costas! The sportscaster totally dissed Caitlyn Jenner, saying that her receiving the ESPY’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award is just a ‘crass exploitation’ meant to grab headlines and there were other athletes more deserving of the honor!
One of the best parts of Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair profile was the announcement that the 65-year old Gold Medal Olympian would receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at this year’s ESPYs. She totally deserves it, right? Bob Costas, 62, doesn’t think so! Bob dissed Caitlyn, calling her ESPY’s honor nothing more than a “crass exploitation!”
Bob slammed the ESPYs and Caitlyn during the June 8 edition of The Dan Patrick Show, reports Us Weekly. While calling in, Bob said that there were other athletes who deserved the award more and that picking Caitlyn was just a publicity stunt!
“I wish Caitlyn all the happiness in the world and all the peace of mind in the world,” Bob said, before adding, “However, it strikes me that awarding the Arthur Ashe award to Caitlyn Jenner is just a crass exploitation play. It’s a tabloid play.”
Bob didn’t stop his insults there. He went on to say, “I’m pretty sure they could have found someone who was much closer to actively involved in sports, who would have been deserving of what that award represents.”
Though Bob admitted that it did take “some measure of personal courage to do what Caitlyn Jenner has done,” he ended his comment by saying that Caitlyn receiving the award is “just a play to pump up the audience.” Ouch!
Maybe it was a too early for Bob and he needed some extra shut-eye, because he seemed to forget that Caitlyn is the highest profile transgender athlete. Not to mention, Bruce Jenner was once the biggest name in sports. To fully go public with her true self is a huge act of bravery, making her a perfect candidate for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award!
Bob is just the latest of Caitlyn’s haters. Clint Eastwood, Chris Brown, Drake Bell, Connor Cruise and Snoop Dogg have all insulted her. Thankfully, Caitlyn’s too happy with being herself to care about what the haters have to say. “Caitlyn heard what Clint said,” a source EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.com, “and basically shrugged her shoulders. Not a peep!”
What do you think about Bob Costas’s comments, HollywoodLifers? Do you agree or do you think he was totally wrong?
