Fantastic news, ‘Harry Potter’ fans! Eddie Redmayne will officially be starring as Newt Scamander in J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ spin-off, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,’ Warner Bros. confirmed on June 1.
It’s official! Eddie Redmayne will be taking on the lead role of Newt Scamandar in J.K. Rowling’s highly anticipated Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Warner Bros. announced on June 1 that the Oscar-winning actor, 33, will be starring in the trilogy, saying they’re “thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.” Yes, we are, too!
Eddie as Newt Scamandar? Yes, please! Rumors began swirling in April that the Theory of Everything actor was being considered for the lead role in the trilogy, which is slated for worldwide release in 3D and IMAX on Nov.18, 2016, according to our sister site Deadline.
David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films will be directing the spin-off, and he couldn’t be more excited to have Eddie on board! “Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity,” David said. “I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in J.K. Rowling’s wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way.”
In addition, Greg Silveman, WB President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production said, “Eddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today’s most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors. We are thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable performance as Newt Scamander, the central character in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’”
None of the other lead roles for characters Tina, Queenie or Jacob have yet been cast, but we’re ecstatic to see Eddie cast as Newt. Honestly, we can’t think of a better actor to portray the famed magizoologist.
‘Harry Potter’ Spin-Off ‘Fantastic Beasts: ‘Three Megamovies Are Planned’
We’ve totally been missing the wonderful wizarding world created by J.K., and we know that Fantastic Beasts will be epic. In fact, “three megamovies are planned” on the fictitious author’s life, HollywoodLife.com previously reported.
J.K. said in a statement after the news was announced, “Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway.” We can’t wait!
