David Letterman’s last ‘Late Show’ episode was bittersweet to say the least. While we gear up for Stephen Colbert to take the hot seat as the new host, David took a minute to gush about his successor!
On May 20, late night television changed forever as David Letterman, 68, signed off of The Late Show for the last time. Before he could go, though, David wanted to make it clear that he approved of his successor, Stephen Colbert, 50, by announcing he’s “very excited” for Stephen to take over! Aww.
Last ‘Late Show’: David Letterman Says He’s Excited For Stephen Colbert To Host
David’s last show was sure an eventful one. Filled with tons of hysterical and memorable jokes, and bittersweet goodbyes, there were tons of heartwarming moments! But it was when he announced that he’s excited for Stephen to be the new host, which made us smile.
“I’m very excited,” David said. “I think he’s going to do a wonderful job and I wish Stephen and his staff and crew nothing but the greatest success.”
BRB, just drying our eyes! We’re glad Stephen gets David’s stamp of approval, and we too, are excited to see Stephen take over.
David also made it a point to express how “blessed and lucky” he is to “work with men and women who are smarter and funnier” than himself. Dave wasn’t giving himself enough credit for being a phenomenal host, but it’s great that he took a minute to thank everyone he worked with over the years!
From One Talk Show Legend To Another
It’s been just over a year since Dave announced he was retiring back in April, 2014. Following 33 illustrious years in late night (and on a couple different networks), the news was certainly hard to swallow.
Immediately, the question began to loom: Who would take over The Late Show throne? Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long for an answer as it was announced days later that Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, would step in for Dave following his exit.
On Dec. 18, 2014, the final episode of The Colbert Report aired on Comedy Central, officially clearing Stephen’s schedule. CBS announced that the first episode of the Stephen-hosted Late Show will air this Fall, on Sept. 8, 2015.
