‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans were shocked to see the return of Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd returned. But, it was Shonda Rhimes’ touching message about what she called his ‘final scene’ on the show that was the real surprise!
Shonda Rhimes, 45, finally opened up about the hard loss of Patrick Dempsey, 49, on her beloved show Grey’s Anatomy. During the season 11 finale, the show’s creator tweeted an emotional message revealing how she really felt about editing Derek Shepherd’s “final” scene on the series. Grab the tissues!
Shonda Rhimes: Patrick Dempsey’s Final Scene Gets Sweet Message
When Derek appeared one last time in a flashback scene from the day he died on the May 14 season finale, fans were left mourning the loss of the beloved character yet again. But, it was the woman who created him that truly felt the pain of seeing him on the screen one last time.
“Here come my own personal supply of tissues,” Shonda tweeted as the scene aired. “Goodbye, birthday twin. Can’t believe this is his last scene I’ll ever see in my editing room.” Aw.
The scene showed Derek standing on the ferry while leaving a voicemail for Meredith, which she later gave to his sister, Amelia. In the scene, he’s describing how beautiful the scenery is, how much he loves her, and how he’ll see her when he gets home. As viewers know, he sadly did not find his way home.
What made Shonda’s message so emotionally overwhelming is all of the crazy hype and rumors about why Patrick really left — or was kicked off — the show. Thankfully, it seems like she misses him just as much as the rest of us do!
