We’re still reeling from the fact that Derek Shepherd died on the April 23 episode of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ but Eric Dane made us feel a little bit better by seemingly suggesting that Mark and Derek are now in heaven together. See the sweet pic he posted on Twitter!
Even though Patrick Dempsey, 49, will no longer appear on Grey’s Anatomy, it gives us a bit of comfort knowing that Derek Shepherd is now in heaven with his best friend, Mark Sloan. At least, that’s how Eric Dane, 42, would like to image things, according to a picture he posted on Twitter, following the heart-wrenching April 23 episode.
Eric Dane On Patrick Dempsey’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Exit: Mark & Derek Are In Heaven

Obviously, that photo depicts one of the most emotional scenes to ever air on Grey’s Anatomy. It was after Meredith nearly drowned and Derek leaned on Mark for support. Mark later died in season nine, when he suffered from serious injuries, following a terrible plane crash.
And now that Derek is also dead, he and Mark can now be together again. Obviously, we’d still like to have Derek on the show, but this was a sweet way for Eric to honor the fallen character.
Shonda Rhimes On Patrick Dempsey’s Exit — How ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Will Go On
Also responding to the sad episode, show creator Shonda Rhimes released a statement to HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site TVLine, and while she didn’t give an explanation for Patrick’s exit, she did discuss the loss of Derek and teased what’s ahead for Meredith:
“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character — for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example — happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true — of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomyfamily are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”
