Another reboot! Fox has just announced plans to recreate the classic film ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’– as a TV movie. Check out the deets!
Well, why not? 40 years after its original release, Fox is going to reinvent Rocky Horror Picture Show with a modern day twist, reformatted as a made for television movie! No word yet on a release date, however, it has been announced that Kenny Ortega (best known for his work on Xanadu and High School Musical) will direct, executive produce and choreograph the two hour special. The news comes on the heels of several musical-television events over the last few years, including NBC’s The Sound of Music and Peter Pan, both of which were performed and broadcast live. So, will Rocky Horror Picture Show follow the trend and hit the screen completely live?
‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ Reboot
Rocky Horror Picture Show, the much beloved and still frequently screened cult classic which tells the story of a transvestite scientist, is getting a modern day makeover. However, unlike the recent filmed and broadcast live musicals of the last few years, Rocky will be filmed and edited ahead of time, giving Fox a desirable safety net.
The project is certainly in good hands with Kenny Ortega, however, it won’t need too much work as far as the screenplay goes: Fox intends to remain completely true to the original script from the 1973 play, which was written by Jim Sharman and Richard O’Brien.
Reboots, Reboots, Reboots
Reboot projects are all the rage right now, as plans for a reinvented piece from the past seem to be announced every other day.
In fact, Rocky Horror Picture Show comes on the heels of announced plans for remakes of Gremlins, Dumbo, Beauty and the Beast, Twin Peaks and, honestly, so many others that we can’t even count. Still though, the news never gets any less exciting!
