Rob’s ‘Twilight’ character Edward Cullen was the original Christian Grey in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, but Rob admitted he can’t quite grasp the ‘profound connection’ behind the sexy love story in a new interview on Feb. 13.
Who would have thought — Robert Pattinson, 28, doesn’t exactly understand what Fifty Shades Of Grey is all about! E.L. James’ best-selling novel, originally written as Twilight fan fiction, has the British hunk confused yet amazed by the ongoing Twi-hard “fan base!” Rob dished all his thoughts about the erotic love story in an interview with Reuters on Feb. 13.
Robert Pattinson On ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’: He Reveals He Doesn’t Get It
Even years after Twilight ended, Rob continues to be amazed by the Twilight fan base! But that doesn’t mean he grasps Twilight‘s connection to Fifty Shades of Grey.
“I think it must be very, very different. I don’t see how it can work if it’s not different. It’s amazing, it’s that [Twilight] fan base,” Rob told the mag. “There’s some kind of profound connection that a bunch of people have to it and I’ve never figured out quite what it is.”
Rob also admitted that he’s never read the erotic book, which was originally titled Master of the Universe. E.L.’s original masochistic story featured Rob’s Twilight character Edward Cullen and Kristen Stewart’s Twilight character, Bella Swan. However, E.L. ended up trading their names for Christian and Anastasia and sold 70 million copies of the book. Yet still Rob hasn’t picked up a copy of the book!
Rob was even rumored to be a contender to play Christian in the very early stages of casting, but alas, Rob did not want to be a part of another franchise.
Robert Pattinson’s Connection to Jamie Dornan
Surprisingly enough, Rob and the man we now know to be our Christian Grey, Jamie Dornan, actually go way back! Rob admitted in the interview that he and Jamie, 32, have known each other for awhile.
“It’s kind of weird… I’ve known Jamie for about 10 years,” Rob told the mag.
We know Rob hasn’t read the book, but perhaps he’ll want to see his buddy Jamie on the big screen playing the brooding businessman. Maybe then he can understand the “profound connection” to his beloved Twilight franchise.
