Naturally, the outspoken Joan Rivers, 81, won a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for Diary of a Mad Diva on Feb. 8. In Melissa Rivers‘ heartfelt acceptance speech on behalf of her mother, she paid tribute not only to the Fashion Police host, but also to her best friend. Find out what Melissa said in her bittersweet speech while accepting her mother’s Grammy.
Joan Rivers Wins Grammy For Best Spoken Word Album: Melissa Rivers Accepts Award
Joan passed away on Sept. 4 due to complications from a throat surgery. We can’t imagine how Melissa is coping, following her mother’s death, but she managed to crack a joke while accepting Joan’s award. It’s something that we feel her mother would have wanted.
“These are the people that have kept me alive the last five months and I am forever grateful. If my mother were here tonight, she would be thrilled to have her first Grammy, but she would likely have it copied and on the air at QVC by 11,” said Melissa, 47, according to HollywoodLife.com.
We love how Melissa’s speech was both sensitive and snarky — it would have undoubtedly made her mother laugh with pride.
As expected, Melissa circled back to her Fashion Police family member, Giuliana, to reflect on her mother’s win.
“We are here for a special reason. I said if my mother won for best spoken world album I would come back and only talk to you,” Melissa revealed to Giuliana.
“It’ a difficult moment, it’s a little bittersweet, she was nominated once for her comedy and then she was never nominated for any of her other books and then it’s like, now, she goes and wins, but it’s wonderful how loved was she and how she is getting so much attention now and people are really understanding what she was about. But, most importantly about being here tonight is that I wanted to come on the red carpet and share it with you and Kelly,” added Melissa.
Melissa Rivers Looks Fabulous On The Red Carpet
Although Melissa, 47, accepted her mother’s Grammy inside the Staples Center, we think she felt more at ease at her mother’s second home: the red carpet.
The TV producer and personality looked brave and beautiful with her adorable soon, Cooper Endicott, 14, by her side as she got candid during E!’s Grammy Awards pre-show.
Clad in a sharp black blazer, a maxi skirt with a slit, and minimal black stilettos, Melissa looked flawless. She completed her sophisticated look with a diamond necklace and earrings. We also loved her chic long pony tail!
If Joan was still here, she would have definitely given her daughter the Best Dressed Award.
We are so happy that Joan won a Grammy and we are thinking of Melissa and Cooper during this bittersweet moment.
